At ILDA, one of the biggest issues for the past few months has been the fight against people using ILDA's name in illegal or misleading ways.
ILDA is well aware of ILDALASER.COM and the so-called "ILDA Seal of Quality". We have hired lawyers to advise us. We have worked with eBay to pull listings of laser projectors called "ILDA" and "MYILDA". We have added "TM" to logos at our website, to make clear that "ILDA" is a trademark of the International Laser Display Association. We have researched certification programs to find out what legalities that ILDA must follow. We have added material at our website about proper use of the logo.
We have had some success. The worst-offending eBay auctions have been pulled. We are working on steps to further protect ILDA's trademark, and to take further action against infringement.
On specifics:
The "ILDA Seal of Quality" is of course NOT a product of the International Laser Display Association. As far as I know, it is used by one company, and we have eBay pull their listings whenever this appears. I have not seen it recently on an auction. If you see it, please let me know.
The issue of ILDA compatibility is described at our webpage,
http://www.laserist.org/logopolicy.htm. ILDA does not do testing for compatibility at this time.
People are not supposed to use the term "ILDA Compatible" (with a capital
'C') to imply there is some sort of official ILDA compatibility program. It is fine to say in a general sense that a projector is "ILDA compatible" or "meets the ILDA standard".
A bigger problem may be that some companies advertise ILDA compatibility when only one part of their projector is compatible. For example, there may be a DB-25 parallel-port style connector, but the pins and signals are all incompatible. Sure, you can plug it in, but nothing will happen. (At least, not what you want to happen!)
In conclusion, ILDA is aware of these issues and is working on various ways to combat them. The Board feels ILDA's good reputation is worth fighting for.
If you have any questions, or if you see potential misuse, please feel free to write to me directly.
