Capacitor building for Air lasers-- HELp!!!!!!!!

Beitrag von gmpf » Mo 19 Mai, 2003 11:24 pm

Does it look like Neoprene or Nylon could work as dielectrics in an "air laser"???
what about 3-plate capacitors????

Do you already have Laser-Equipment?: Lexel 88, Compass 315, diverse HeNe und eine Menge Kleinkram.

neoprene and nylon is to thick. a good condensator needs a thin, high isolating dielectricum. test the foil from a overhead projector.

Can you or somebody else tell me why not to use a commercial capacitor or an old one from tv set? I don't understand the problem with the "air laser".
That's just for my information - Thanks!

Hi Ekkard,

as far as i know, Air (in real world Nitrogen) lasers work with very high voltages (app. 25-30 kV), so no commercial capacitor (no one sombody can pay for) can withstand this voltages.

use a serial circuit of some "low voltage" capacitors. the voltage can be added, the capacity divided.

e.g.: you have 10 capacitors 1uF/1kV
Circuit: --||--||--||--||--||--||--||--||--||--||--
0.1uF/10kV

Phil, this is the Laser-Board for the english - speaking - people. !!!Laserboard [en] !!!
If you can write no english then please post in the german laser board.
And I think there is not much information in your message...

@mod: If you want delete both posts ...

@floh: it's better to add parallel resistors to the caps to split the voltage. I think 1Meg Ohm is good for the job.
